Evander ‘Real Deal’ Holyfield will be facing 47-year-old Kevin ‘The Clones Colossus’ McBride in a heavyweight match as the chief support for Teofimo Lopez vs. George Kambosos Jr card on Triller pay-per-view this summer on June 5th. Mike Coppinger is reporting the news of the Tyson – McBride match being added to the Teofimo card.
It’s debatable whether the inclusion of the Holyfield vs McBride exhibition match will do much for the Teofimo – Kambosos Jr card in terms of selling tickets and pumping up the pay-per-view numbers.
It’s already a massive stretch to have IBF/WBA/WBC Franchise/WBO lightweight champion Teofimo’s mandatory defense against Kambosos Jr (19-0, 10 KOs) as a pay-per-view headliner, but to add an old timer’s fight between 58-year-old Holyfield and the soon to be 48-year-old McBride as the co-feature, it doesn’t sound like a great buy.
Holyfield (44-10-2, 29 KOs) is still well known, but he’s old and he hasn’t fought in 10 years since his 10th round knockout win over Brian Nielsen on May 7th, 2011.
Adding Holyfield to the card might attract some nostalgic fans, but you can’t imagine a lot of them want to see him taking on the former obscure Irish journeyman McBride.
For the boxing fans that have never heard of the 6’6″ Irish fighter McBride (35-10-1, 29 KOs), he’s a former journeyman that defeated an out-of-shape-looking Mike Tyson by a sixth-round stoppage in the final fight of his career on June 11th, 2005.
After having early success against the huge 271-lb McBride, Tyson gassed out in the fifth and began getting punished. Eventually, he quit and didn’t fight against for 15 years before coming back against Roy Jones Jr for an exhibition match last November.
